ABG is so excited to be back to in-person baby preparation classes. Over the past two+ years, we’ve been flexible (just like YOU have), adjusting to virtual classes, shifting offerings, and showing up in the ways we are able for your growing family.

Keep reading to learn more about our class offerings for folks in the Austin area.

Infant Safety and CPR Classes

The main goal of this class is to offer informational support to parents and families. We want you to feel empowered in your choices, parenting, and ways you care for your baby.

In this class, we talk about safe infant sleep from a compassionate, open, nonjudgmental perspective. This includes considerations for independent sleep (in either a crib or bassinet) to bed-sharing and everything in between. We discuss carseat usage, infant CPR, choking, and baby-proofing.

While we share a substantial amount of information in the class, we also encourage families to take time to process the information and resources over time. You cannot do or learn it all at once. You’ll leave class with informational handouts and will receive a follow up email with additional resources.

Newborn Care Classes

In this class, we focus on the immediate period of time after birth, which is sometimes referred to as “the fourth trimester.” The first three months of baby’s life are very transitional, as they adjust to life outside of the womb. (During this time, you, too, are transitioning into a very new role, and if you gave birth, you are recovering.)

In this class, I invite parents to consider the differences between cultural norms and biology and consider how you might like to navigate this tension and make meaningful choices for your family. This is philosophical work, really!

On the practical level, we discuss tips and strategies for feeling successful in early parenting. We talk about ways to soothe your baby and help them regulate. This class also addresses baby hygiene (including bathing), feeding options, diapering, and promoting good sleep habits.

Breastfeeding Basics Classes

This is the topic I get the most questions and concerns about. Feeding is an important and non-linear journey, and we highly recommend all parents who plan on breastfeeding take a prep class.

This class explores the physiology around how breastfeeding works. We address challenges that can arise along the breastfeeding journey, including signs to look out for that may indicate a problem or health issue– for either baby or parent. You’ll leave with ideas, tools, and resources for navigating these challenges, as well as answers to the common question “is my baby getting enough?!”
