Are You Called to Work With Babies and Families?

It makes me happy to see new parents feeling confident! As a postpartum doula, I have the honor of supporting growing families as they adjust to and celebrate their new “normal.”

Postpartum doulas are so needed– and desired! Every time a new baby comes into a family, whether through direct birth, surrogacy, or adoption, that family can benefit from the assistance of a knowledgeable, caring professional. Doulas are professional caregivers who provide non-medical, non-judgmental support in the form of information, emotional support, and practical skills and assistance.

If this work with families sounds interesting to you, I invite you to consider the following questions:

  • Do you love working with babies?
  • Do you enjoy helping families through transitions?
  • Is your presence calming?
  • Are you able to put your personal opinions aside in order to center the people you are caring for?
  • Are you looking for a change of career?
  • Are you self-motivated?
  • Do you have flexibility in your schedule and income as you get started or someone else paying the bills? (It can take time to grow a stable business.)

If you nodded your head though those questions, starting a career as a postpartum doula may be a perfect way to serve yourself, your family, and your community. Keep reading to learn more about our new online training.

What Does the ABG Postpartum Doula Certification Program Cover?

Today, with demand in birth-related professions growing all over the country (and the world), Austin Baby Guru has expanded our highly-praised training into an online Postpartum Doula Certification Program.

This self-paced, online program focuses on deepening your understanding of postpartum doula work and why it matters, hands-on support techniques, and business development. What sets the ABG Postpartum Doula Certification program apart is that we are comprehensive and prepare you to work as a self-employed professional. This could mean starting your own business or working as a contractor or employee for an established doula organization. For a point of reference, postpartum doulas typically earn between $25 and $75 per hour, depending on where you live.

ABG Postpartum Doula Certification Training has 9 modules:

  1. The Role of a Postpartum Doula- including household & business and communication
  2. Birth Physiology and Healing
  3. Infant Safety/CPR
  4. Newborn Care
  5. Baby Feeding
  6. Working with Multiples
  7. Postpartum Mood Disorders
  8. Grief and Loss
  9. Growing into a Family

It is of utmost importance that postpartum doulas get diverse training because each family, each situation will be different. Working with families, in-home can be intimate and intense. ABG wants you to be prepared for the celebrations and challenges you will face in the role of a postpartum doula.

Our certification program also requires doulas-in-training to read books related to the 9 modules. These books help you broaden and apply the knowledge you will gain through the course. Additionally, students will receive membership in the ABG private Facebook group, where you will find support and mentoring from our staff and many experienced postpartum doulas. ABG will also support you through the learning process with access to a trainer for questions and continuing mentoring.

ABG is excited to partner with folks all over the world on stepping into a new career that will change your life and the lives of so many others. Please reach out directly if you have any questions about our program. And if you want a little peek into a day in my life as an overnight postpartum doula, check this article out.
